Friday (M)orning Music Review

I have long been anticipating the release of the new Lifehouse album, Smoke and Mirrors. For ten years now they have stood as one of my favorite bands. In fact, the first run through the entire No Name Face album and I was hooked. It was the first, and to this day, one of the only cds that I can listen to all the way through without skipping a single song. It was brilliant. Lyrically, musically, any way you look at it. I remember listening to the song Simon when my life was probably at the lowest point it has ever been. That song got me through a lot of sleepless nights. I felt that I could relate to the words so well. They were comforting.

You can find the lyrics here.

So with that said ....

I'm not so impressed with Smoke and Mirrors.

But maybe it isn't as bad as I have previously made it out to sound. It is starting to kind of grow on me. Despite the fact that songs number 3, 8, 10, and 12 all sound like a concoction that Daughtry created for the band, there are a few good songs. Of course, From Where You Are, a song that has been out for years now, is on the album and it is really beautiful. I also like the tracks Smoke and Mirrors, Halfway Gone, and number 5 - It is What it Is, just happens to be "my jam".

But over all? Could I listen to this cd from beginning to end? I'm afraid not. It has lost a lot of what makes Lifehouse, Lifehouse in my opinion.

Jason's voice is one of the things that made the band so unique. Sure, its a little raspy and sounds a bit as if he might have some laryngitis, but I dig that. So why does he now scream and try to sound so rock band? It's not working for him at all.
I want their old stuff back. The old sound, the old meaningful lyrics. What do we have on this album? Lyrics like:
"Cause you're halfway gone and I'm on my way
And I'm feeling, feelin feelin this way
Cause I'm halfway in but don't take too long
Cause I'm halfway gone, I'm halfway gone"
Wow. So profound.

Maybe they set the bar too high for me with the first album. Maybe they will never live up to that again. After 10 years and 5 albums I'm still anxious to see if they will ever blow me away again. But for now as a fan, I'm afraid I'm Halfway Gone.

  3. Ah, Lifehouse! Just a part of the new music you introduced me too during our time together at A&M! I like me some Daughty, but I agree. They should have kept their own style.
    I miss you so much!
